Mustang Fox Chassis Facts

Mustang Fox Chassis Facts thumbnail
The Fox chasis has cought the attention of car collectors.

Collectors have recently taken an interest in the Fox-chassis Mustang. The Fox body name comes from a code used in its early development, not a person. The chassis first appeared in the Mustang in 1979 and served until 1993 as part of the sixth generation of Mustangs.

  1. Dimensions

    • The Fox chassis had a wheelbase of 100.4 inches and a length of 179.1 inches. The body had an angular look and was a bit shorter than the original Mustang. Even so, the car had a roomier inside with more shoulder and hip room. This body came with a coupe or fastback hatchback.

    Special Service Package

    • In 1982, the California Highway Patrol was the first law enforcement agency to order the Special Service Package for law enforcement. From 1982 to 1993, more than 15,000 Special Service Mustangs were manufactured for law enforcement use. The law enforcement version generated 157 horsepower.

    Underpowered

    • When the first Fox bodies came out, the Mustangs were underpowered. The famed 5.0-liter engine put out a mere 140 horsepower in 1979.
