Where to Place a Humidifier in a House

A humidifier may be helpful in reducing the effects of dry air in your home. Knowing where to place a humidifier will help you to get the most use out of it.

Function

A humidifier is usually used in a home to relieve the dry nose, throat, lips and skin and itchy eyes caused by dry indoor air. By adding cool moisture to dry air, a humidifier helps to relieve these symptoms and may also reduce static electricity.

Types

The five different types of humidifier are steam vaporizers, cool mist impeller humidifiers, ultrasonic humidifiers, warm mist humidifiers and evaporative and wicking humidifiers. Humidifiers used in homes are usually portable, such as single-room humidifiers. However, whole-house humidifiers may also be used.

Placement

Single-room humidifiers can be placed in any room in your home that needs extra moisture, such as in the living room, dining room or in your bedroom. It should be placed where air circulates freely and, if possible, near a return air vent.

Considerations

Remember to only use a humidifier when it is needed, as too much moisture can lead to the growth of airborne microorganisms in your home. Humidifiers should be cleaned frequently as directed and you should always follow the manufacturer's instructions for use and maintenance.
