Simple Flower Bed Ideas

Plant a flower bed filled with one type of flower.

Whether planted along the front of your house or alongside your pool area, a flower bed brings color, texture and interest to your landscape. An attractive flower bed doesn't have to be difficult to achieve -- there are several simple ways to make a bold statement.

One Species

A flower bed filled with one type of flower has great visual impact. Mass plantings of tulips, phlox or day lilies in the same colors will catch the eye and make a vibrant display. Since you'll be planting the same types of flowers, you don't have to worry about different sun and soil requirements for different plants.

Annuals

Annuals provide instant color to a flower bed, since they are already in bloom when purchased. For vibrant color, plant a variety of annuals. Plant flowers in a succession of heights with the taller annuals -- such as zinnias and Gerbera daisies -- along the back of the bed and the shorter specimens -- petunias, for instance -- in the front of the flower bed.

Wildflowers

Wildflowers -- or flowers that are native to your location -- are ideal for making a simple flower bed. Since these flowers will indefinitely grow in your area, you won't have to worry about having success with your garden. Simply turn the soil in the flower bed, scatter a pack of wildflower seeds over the area and water.
