What Is a Covenant Agreement?

A covenant is a solemn and binding agreement between two or more people. In legal terms, it usually means a written agreement, but in biblical terms it also means the implicit agreement between God and his people.

Significance

A covenant is sometimes entered into in writing and placed under seal. All parties must agree to the terms of the covenant before it is signed. No particular wording is required for a covenant, but it must clearly state the intentions of the people involved.

Features

Covenants may also be implied. For example, in a lease negotiation between a landlord and tenant, the law implies a covenant that the tenant should enjoy the property undisturbed, even if this is not specifically stated.

Biblical Covenants

Marriage is described as a covenant in the Bible. The Old Testament depicts Israel as being in solemn covenant with God, to obey his laws. In the New Testament, God established his covenant through Jesus Christ.
