Diversity Supplier Certification

Diversity is important in today's business world; in fact, some corporations and organizations must prove they do business with minorities. National diversity supplier certification indicates that a neutral third-party organization has closely inspected a business and certifies it is owned and operated by a minority.

Definition

For the purposes of supplier diversity certification, minority owners/operators include Asians, Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, women, gays and lesbians, and people with disabilities.

Certification Benefits

Some financial opportunities and general small business programs target minority businesses. For instance, the Business Consortium Fund gives loans to companies with diversity supplier certification. Some organizations also offer exclusive contracts, educational programs and networking opportunities.

Obtaining Certification

Specific requirements for certification differ according to the organization, but most applicants will need to supply a business plan, financial documents, legal papers (such as articles of incorporation), lists of employees, proof of citizenship and gender, and customer references. Fees may run up to $350 (as of 2010).
