Lighting
-
Several problems can occur with the actual lighting of rope lights. The lights may not light up at all or it may just be a section that does not light up. The lights may also flicker instead of blink when they are supposed to. Lighting problems can be due to a frayed cord, blown fuse, weather damage or an unstable power source.
Storage
-
Storing rope lights can present a world of problems. The small lights are made of glass and can easily break. The long strings of lights quickly become tangled. To help with these problems, always use the services of at least two people when you install and uninstall your rope lights. Keeping the lights from hitting objects during the hanging and taking down process can decrease the chances of breakage. Keep the strings as straight as possible while winding and unwinding them to help eliminate the chances of them getting tangled up.

Causes of Damage
-
If heat cannot escape from the area, the covering on the wires can overheat and melt. Do not turn on a string of lights before they have been uncoiled. Placing rope lights into a groove or through doors or windows can also cause the plastic wire coating to melt. Do not use rope lights that have a damaged wire coating. Do not sharply bend the wire or install using glue, staples or nails, as these items can trap heat or cause wire to short out.
