Are Plasma TVs Good?

Are Plasma TVs Good? thumbnail
Plasma screen televisions produce a very high resolution picture.

Plasma screen televisions were first introduced in the late 1990s as one of the first types of flat screen televisions on the market. They compete now with liquid crystal display (LCD) flat screen televisions, as well as with traditional televisions and computer monitors.

  1. Advantages of Plasma Screen Televisions

    • Plasma screen televisions can produce more colors than the human eye can distinguish, which gives them a lifelike picture. In particular, they have a very dark level of black, something not all televisions can provide. They have very high resolution with no visible scan lines, as can be seen on a traditional television set. The picture on a plasma screen television is uniformly bright, as compared to rear screen projection televisions, which tend to have bright and dim spots on the screen.

    Disadvantages of Plasma Screen Televisions

    • Plasma screen televisions sometimes have a "burn-in" problem, in which a constant image, such as the news ticker at the bottom of a news station becomes permanently visible on the screen. Though burn-in is less present in newer plasma screens, they also have a shorter product life than many types of LCD televisions.

Comparison of Plasma and LCD Televisions

    • LCD screen televisions are often thinner than plasma screen televisions, and use less energy. They also have greater visibility in bright rooms or under direct light. Plasma screen televisions, however, are often less expensive than LCD televisions. With a viewing angle of 170°, plasma screen televisions offer the widest effective viewing angle of any flat-screen television, including LCD screens.
