Burning Smell & Smoke Coming From the DC Jack Area

Burning Smell & Smoke Coming From the DC Jack Area thumbnail
The DC power jack area can have malfunctions.

A key part of a laptop computer is its power input jack, or DC jack. This connector allows the supplied AC charger to move power from an electrical outlet to the charging battery within the computer.

  1. Function

    • The DC jack attaches to the motherboard through solder joints. The circuitry is then routed from the jack, through the motherboard, to the battery needing charge. Once the battery is charged, it sends a signal back through the motherboard to the charger to create a visible signal, typically a green light, to let the user know it has finished powering the battery.

    Considerations

    • If the DC jack area begins to smoke and has a distinct burning smell, disconnect the charger and power down the computer. A common culprit of this symptom is a loose or disconnected DC jack connector causing an electrical short, resulting in a burnt port area.

    Significance

    • Keep in mind that technicians can replace DC jack connectors with a simple soldering job, as opposed to replacing the entire motherboard. Speak with a trained technician about individual circumstances when taking the device into a repair facility.
