Idaho State Law Regarding Fire Sprinkler Systems

Fire sprinkler systems are used for fire protection purposes in many buildings in the United States. States, including Idaho, have established rules to regulate the use of these systems.

  1. Idaho Statutes

    • In Idaho, the fire marshal has authority over fire sprinkler systems. All buildings except single and multiple family dwellings of up to two units must comply with the sprinkler provisions in the International Fire Code, the International Building Code and the International Residential Code.

    Department of Insurance Rules

    • Fire sprinkler systems must meet meet fire protection requirements and National Fire Protection Association standards. Any person or organization that sells, designs, modifies, installs, services and maintains these systems must be properly qualified, licensed by the fire marshal, bonded and insured. The fire marshal must also approve all sprinkler system design plans.

    Licensing Requirements

    • Anyone wishing to become a fire protection sprinkler contractor must obtain a Level III certification in fire protection from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies or equivalent, pass a state examination, and supervise or install at least four fire sprinkler systems of more than 200 heads each. Licenses can be revoked, not renewed or suspended for failing to perform a contract, making false statements, fraud, committing a felony or not following license requirements.
