Squirrels can be difficult to get rid of.

Squirrels are small rodents that make their homes in the tops of trees. When they make their homes in fruit trees they can destroy the crops by eating them for food. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Effects

    • Fruit trees attract squirrels because they see them as a food source. They chew and gnaw on the bark of the trees, which can kill the them. In the spring when the fruit trees begin to bud, the squirrels will eat the buds and prevent it from having fruit.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Physical barriers around your trees will prevent squirrels from getting to them. Wire mesh, netting and plastic tubing work for this purpose. Trim the limbs at least 6 feet away from other trees and your home. Spray squirrel repellent or set traps.

    Warning

    • According to the University of California, squirrels are classified as game animals. Check with your Department of Natural Resources to see if you need a license to trap or control squirrels. In some areas it is illegal to use bait or poison to kill the squirrels.
