Classic Jeep Truck Information
Originating in the run-up to the Second World War, the jeep was created to fulfill the requirement for a light but powerful scouting and utility vehicle that could stand up to the rigors of combat. After the war, a variety of civilian models were produced.

Original Jeep (Willys)
-
The Willys MB was produced during the period from 1941 to 1945 for the U.S. Army. Of the over 600,000 that were produced, more than 50,000 were sent to the USSR as lend-lease war material. The MB, produced by both Willys and Ford, has a distinctive appearance.
Other Military Variants
-
After the war, Willys continued to produce more jeep models for military applications. Modifications and improvements included a larger engine, more rounded fenders, and tailgate with spare tire mount. Such jeeps continued to be used up until they were replaced by the HMMWV or "humvee."

Civilian Variants
-
The "CJ" or civilian jeep line was started in the postwar period, becoming one of the first mass-produced 4X4 vehicles available. With vacuum powered windshield wipers, a better transmission, fake-leather upholstery and available chrome trim, it made for a jeep with all the legendary toughness and durability of the military jeep but with the comforts more commonly associated with civilian vehicles.
