Tire tracks in the snow remind us that winter driving may require snow tires or chains.

Not all states allow studded tires. In some states, drivers must rely on chains to improve traction on snowy or icy roads. Studded tires are the safest bet though for winter driving. For this reason, Kansas allows studded snow tires for part of the year.

  1. Purpose

    • Kansas drivers frequently encounter snow and ice in the winter as well as parts of fall and spring. Studded tires improve traction, and along with safe winter driving habits, decrease skidding.

    Legislation

    • Kansas Statute 8-1742 (Restrictions to Tire Equipment, Chapter 8 (Automobiles and other Equipment), Article 17, Sections 3 and 4 discuss the use of studded tires. Studded tires are allowed in driving conditions, such as snow or ice, that typically cause vehicles to skid, or when the studded tires do not cause road damage. The state legislature leaves specifics of studded tire usage to the discretion of the Secretary of Transportation.

    Time Frame

    • The Kansas State Highway Patrol advises that drivers in the state can legally use studded snow tires from Nov. 1 to April 1.
