Lifting Hook Safety

Lifting Hook Safety thumbnail
Lifting hooks are equipment primarily used in construction.

Lifting-hooks are used in construction to hoist heavy material to high altitudes. Operating lifting-hooks is risky business. Some dangers include possible breakage under the weight of the lifted material. This can occur due to brittle hooks, or hooks attached incorrectly.

  1. Latch and Inspection

    • Inspection of the lifting-hook's latch prior to use is imperative. Ensure that the hook fully supports the weight and not just the latch. Checking for bends, cracks, wear-and-tear and gouges is essential for safety. Lifting-hooks need to be attached with either iron ropes or chains.

    Lifting Hook Authorities

    • Trained staff of the American National Standards Institute, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Mine Safety and Health Administration or the International Standards Organization conduct tests on lifting-hooks. Periodic inspection is required because of safety concerns.

    Suspension Precautions

    • The load's shape, weight and center of gravity must be considered when hanging material is being moved by a lifting-hook. Workers who use lifting-hooks must be trained in slings and hitches, sling capacity and safe-lifting tactics.
