Do your own hair at home.

Hair is an important part of your appearance. Adding highlights to your hair can add a new dimension to your look. They brighten up your face, and add variety to your hair color. Getting highlights at a salon can cost hundreds of dollars, but you can learn to highlight your hair at home for a lot less. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. What Are Highlighs?

    • Highlights are strips of color weaved into your hair that are lighter than your normal hair color. They lighten and brighten up your natural hair color.

    Tools

    • You will need a tail comb to separate and weave through hair to form sections. Hair clips are necessary to keep hair out of your face and way. A small bowl and brushes are used to mix coloring, and apply color to hair. Latex gloves will keep the color from staining your hands. You will also need foil, of course. You can use the same foil you use at home, just cut it into 5-inch strips.

    Steps

    • When applying highlights, you must do one piece at a time. Use a clip to keep the rest of your hair out of the way. Use a tail comb to weave a section of hair from the piece. Place a piece of foil underneath the sectioned hair. Use a colorist's brush to brush hair color to the sectioned piece of hair. Flip the hair to color the underside as well. Fold the foil into thirds. Repeat the process until you have the desired amount of highlights. Leave color in your hair for at least 30 minutes, then remove the foils and wash your hair.
