During the Industrial Revolution, foundries produced vast quantities of cast iron garden furniture. Cast iron furniture was made by pouring molten iron into molds to create the parts, which were then bolted together.

The furniture was usually painted green and had features that were also in vogue in rustic Victorian wooden furniture designs. These included feet that resembled roots, as well as decorative ferns, grapevines and flowers.
