Wireless Systems Vs. Wired

Wireless Systems Vs. Wired thumbnail
Debate continues over the benefits of wired and wireless Internet systems.

The development of wireless technology has left many consumers confused about the best choice of Internet service. In the majority of cases, making an informed choice between wired and wireless systems will simply come down to individual requirements and expectations.

  1. Speed

    • Wireless technology is capable of producing faster upload and download speeds, because informational transmission times are greatly reduced. However, wired systems actually allow for faster transfer of data if several computers need to be networked together.

    Functionality

    • Wireless systems are more functional because they allow greater mobility. A computer set up on a wired Internet connection can often look unsightly, and if cables need to be run into separate rooms, they can present tripping or snagging hazards. Several computers within a single household can operate on a wireless basis from a single router and there is no risk of cables becoming dislodged or unconnected.

    Cost

    • A wired Internet connection will be considerably cheaper if dial-up technology is used. However, most wireless broadband services continue to fall in price as competition for business increases. Wireless networking continues to be more expensive because of the hardware required, and security is more likely to be compromised in comparison to a wired alternative.
