Grow lights provide a light boost for your plants.

Without enough light, plants will bear less new growth or develop an elongated appearance. Plant lights allow you to provide plans with light without placing them near a window. This way, you can place the plants where you want them -- if you use the grow light properly. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Distance

    • Most plants do best when the ends of their leaves are placed 6 to 12 inches from the light source, according to the University of Missouri Extension. The amount of light the plant receives lessens significantly if it's placed much outside that distance.

    Types

    • Gardeners can use incandescent or fluorescent bulbs for grow lights, but fluorescents offer several advantages. Plants prefer the color of light they produce, so they grow better, and these bulbs do not get hot (as incandescents do). This means that the plant light won't burn the plant leaves.

    Tip

    • To increase the amount of light your plant receives without bringing in another plant light or changing the distance, use mirrors. Position the mirror so it reflects light back onto the plant's leaves.
