Massage Therapy Instructor Training

You must be a certified massage therapist to take instructor training.

A massage therapy instructor must practice as a massage therapist before training to become an instructor. Across the United States, you'll find community and specialized colleges offering massage therapy instructor training.

Training

You must have proof of massage therapy certification to train as an instructor, as well as a minimum of 500 hours of massage therapy training. Coursework includes the study of various techniques, including prenatal, sports and Swedish massage, group dynamics, class and workshop preparation and other theories, techniques and skills needed to be an instructor.

Instructor Certification

Requirements for massage therapy instructor certification vary by state. National teaching certificates are available, but you must comply with your state's requirements. In most cases, states administering instructor certification are the Department of Health, Department of Education, State Board of Massage, all three or a combination of these.

Continuing Education

Working massage therapy instructors are required to meet state and national requirements for continuing education to maintain their teaching or certification status. As well, you must maintain an excellent standing with your massage license and be covered by teaching insurance.
