Insects on Weeping Fig Trees

Weeping fig trees (Ficus benjamina) are often used as indoor plants and can be found in variegated or green varieties. While weeping fig trees are rarely affected by disease, insects can be a concern.

Types

Spider mites are a common pest of the weeping fig tree. These tiny mites are members of the spider family and measure only about one-fiftyth of an inch, according to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Mealybugs, another weeping fig pest, damage the tree by sucking nutrients from it. Scale insects can infest weeping figs, staying close to the tree's stem.

Symptoms

Insect infestations often go unnoticed until the tree does not look healthy. Curled leaves, stippled leaves and reduced tree vigor are all symptoms of insect infestation. Spider mites often leave a fine webbing under tree leaves. Mealybugs deposit bits of white cottony material on the leaves or stems. Suspect scale insects when you see the sticky goo known as honeydew deposited on and around the tree.

Control

Tailor the method of controlling insect infestations to the pest attacking your weeping fig tree. Hosing the tree down with a forceful stream of water can knock insects and pests from the tree. Spray the tree with horticultural soaps or oils, which can kill pests without damaging your tree. For stronger chemical control, use an insecticide or miticide.
