About Medical Coding Training in India thumbnail
Medical coding is vital for medical professionals to receive payment for services.

A medical insurance coder reads a patient's medical chart for a service visit and converts the diagnosis, symptoms, procedures and medications into codes for insurance billing purposes. Medical coding requires knowledge of various aspects of the medical field, administrative duties and insurance company payer requirements.

  1. Required Courses

    • A medical coder in India is required to complete courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and American medical law and ethics. Medical insurance coders are also informed of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy requirements, along with medical coding and billing requirements and updates for various insurance companies.

    Additional Coursework

    • Coders are also trained in administrative medical office practices such as the accounting practices of medical professionals in the United States, general communication such as business letters and formats of professional business development.

    Training and Certification

    • Most programs for medical coding in India are composed of two hours of training per day, Monday through Friday, for approximately two months. Medical coders must then pass a certification test to become certified and obtain employment.
