Raspberries are prolific growers.

Raspberries are productive plants that thrive in well-drained, sandy loam. Raspberry bushes prefer a sunny location, and they multiply prodigiously. Raspberry plants need plenty of room to grow, and require attention to avoid becoming too tall. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Spacing

    • Different varieties of raspberries need different amounts of space. As a general rule, when planting raspberries, you should allow at least 10 feet between rows, and 4 to 6 feet between plants in the row, according to FineGardening.com.

    Pruning

    • Raspberries can grow to a height of 6 to 7 feet. Pruning is an important part of the care of raspberries, and is done to remove older canes to allow newer canes to grow and produce fruit. Pruning also helps minimize disease problems.

    Considerations

    • Growing raspberries should always be done with a trellis, according to the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. A trellis helps keep the crop off the ground, and makes the plants easier to manage.
