PC Hibernation Problems

If you fall asleep waiting for your computer to wake up from hibernation mode, it's time to fix the problem.

Hibernation mode saves the current state of your computer and then shuts down. When the PC is restarted, you can resume your session as you last left it. Several types of hibernation problems can occur, such as the computer constantly waking up when it should still be hibernating, failing to hibernate and failing to wake from hibernation.

  1. Constant Waking

    • Some hibernating computers may awaken spontaneously at specific times. This is often caused by previously scheduled tasks on the PC. To fix this, open the Windows "Start" menu, select the "Task Scheduler" option and cancel any scheduled tasks.

    Computer Fails to Hibernate

    • When a PC fails to hibernate, it is likely because the hibernation feature has been disabled. If this is the case, the "hibernate" or "sleep" option will not appear on the list of shutdown commands. To fix this, select "Start", "Run", type "cmd" and then type "powercfg -h on" (without quotes).

    Computer Fails to Restart

    • A computer will sometimes fail to awaken from hibernation mode; it appears to be frozen and must be restarted by a hard reboot. Unfortunately, this means that any work not saved prior to hibernation will be lost. This problem is often caused by currently installed video drivers. Simply updating these drivers may be all that's needed to resolve this hibernation issue.
