Designated representatives, formerly called exemptees, work in hospitals and businesses to handle the functions related to distribution and dispensing of dangerous drugs. In California and Florida, current state certification is required for you to work in this position.

  1. Education & Experience

    • You will need at least a high school diploma or GED. A minimum of one year paid work experience in this area is necessary, unless you already meet the prerequisites to take the license exam. Completion of an approved training program provides vital knowledge about regulations and expectations.

    Training Topics

    • California and federal laws concerning the distribution of dangerous drugs or devices, or controlled substances, are addressed. You'll gain an understanding of quality control systems, prescription terminology, and dosages. The United States Pharmacopeia standard regarding safe storage and handling of drugs is explained.

    Training options

    • SkillsPlus International holds classes at your location for a minimum of 10 people. Another option is the self-study program online, which offers you unlimited access to comprehensive material and a final exam at the end of every session. Seminars hosted by Access Pharmacy Resources at its Ontario, California, location are based on years of research and first-hand knowledge of pharmacy law. If you're a Florida applicant, teleconferencing is a convenient alternative for the class.
