What Is SSL Slate?

The term SSL Slate refers to the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) cache in Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser. Clearing the SSL Slate can improve the browser's performance when connecting to some websites.

  1. About SSL

    • The SSL creates a secure channel for communication between two computers over the Internet. Information sent through the SSL uses a unique encryption scheme for each connection, making it nearly impossible for computer hackers to steal information sent through the SSL.

    The SSL Slate

    • When computers connect through the SSL, they exchange client authentication certificates to set up their secure connections. When you navigate away from the page to which you are connected via the SLL, this certificate remains in a special cache called the SSL Slate.

    Clearing the SSL Slate

    • To remove client authentication certificates from your computer's cache, you can use Internet Explorer's "Clear SSL Slate" option. Open Internet Explorer's "Tools" menu and click "Internet Options." Click on the "Clear SSL Slate" option to remove old client authentication certificates.
