Some common items may pose a threat when taken on an aircraft, which is why the Transportation Security Administration enforces certain restrictions with respect to what can be transported. American Airlines abides by the TSA guidelines and restricts certain items on their aircraft.

  1. Personal Care Items

    • Personal care items are allowed in both checked and carry-on baggage. Personal care items exceeding 3 oz. must be placed in checked baggage. Toiletries containing alcohol under 3 oz. are allowed in carry-ons.

    ID Requirements

    • A boarding pass with a valid U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID is required in order to be allowed to go through the checkpoint. Identification must have the passenger's date of birth and gender, an expiration date and a tamper-resistant feature.

    Weapons

    • Defense sprays and explosives are not allowed in checked or carry-on baggage. Firearms are allowed in checked baggage if they have been declared to an agent. Knives, box cutters, ice picks and straight razors are allowed in checked baggage. Plastic knives, scissors and tools smaller than 7 inches and disposable razors are allowed in carry-on baggage.

    Alcoholic Beverages

    • Alcoholic beverages are allowed in checked baggage if they are less than 70 percent by volume. There is a 5 l limit per passenger for alcoholic beverages between 25 and 70 percent by volume.

    Batteries

    • Nine-volt, AA, AAA, C, D, alkaline, carbon zinc, silver oxide, zinc air, nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries are accepted in checked baggage. Spare lithium batteries must be packed in carry-on baggage. Motor vehicle and damaged batteries are not accepted for transport.
