Seniority is typically the reason employees in India climb up the corporate ladder.

India has many personnel policies that are very different than those seen in other parts of the world. Regardless, the strong human resources practices and procedures seen in the country work together to keep the corporate business environment thriving.

  1. Minimum Requirements

    • Companies in India look for potential employment candidates to have a strong educational background. They also give candidates extensive tests to see if they are qualified for the job they're applying to. This is especially common in entry-level positions. Referrals are also taken very seriously, as hiring managers tend to trust the word of those recommending candidates for employment.

    Candidate Recruitment

    • In order to recruit candidates for job interviews, companies advertise open positions in newspapers. These advertisements are very specific, detailing the age and gender necessary for someone to be considered for the position. Interviewers ask candidates personal questions such as their age, future plans, caste background and marital status.

    Job Training

    • Initial job training programs can last anywhere from three to 12 months. Ongoing training is also provided periodically. Many companies include training centers as part of their business structure.

    Performance

    • Annual performance reviews can be difficult for management to perform, because supervisors and their employees often form close friendships. As a result, promotions are typically based on seniority, and not job performance. Company loyalty is valued just as highly as work ethic. India does not practice employment at-will; therefore, it is not common for companies to fire employees or for employees to quit their jobs.

    Benefits

    • Employees in India receive a base salary in addition to many added benefits. Some of these include things such as a housing stipend, commuter allowance and medical benefits. They also include paid time off in the form of sick days, vacation time, emergency leave and federal holidays. Companies often treat employees like family, even offering them benefits such as personal loans.
