It is possible to dye ultrasuede

Ultrasuede is made of 100 percent polyester, not leather. Because it weighs less than leather-based suede and is also easier to clean, ultrasuede is a better choice for dresses and other garments. It is possible to dye ultrasuede. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Dye Type

    • Dyeing polyester takes a different dye type than cotton, or other natural fiber. Dr. Paula Burch, an expert in dye chemistry, recommends disperse dyes rather than acid dyes for all polyester dyeing, including ultrasuede. Disperse dyes require much hotter water and extra chemicals to make the dye adhere to the fabric.

    Considerations

    • While it is possible to dye ultrasuede, care instructions indicate that you should wash it in cold water only. Boiling the ultrasuede to add color may destroy the suede-like finish.

    Painting

    • Dr. Burch suggests that painting your ultrasuede would be more successful than dyeing it. Because of its unique texture, ultrasuede makes interesting tie-dye patterns. You can paint the tied fabric, rather than dye it, for a one-of-a-kind piece of fabric.
