Safety of Nitrogen in Tires

Safety of Nitrogen in Tires thumbnail
Nitrogen maintains pressure longer than air in tires.

Although nitrogen has been available for tire inflation for a long time, it was inaccessible to many people due to cost. Inflating your tires with nitrogen may help improve the safety of your car and increase the life of your tires.

  1. Tire Pressure

    • Nitrogen tires maintain proper pressure for longer periods than tires filled with regular air. Tires that are filled will air lose up to 1.5 PSI in less than a month, whereas a tire filled with nitrogen takes up to six months to reach this point, reports Getnitrogen.org.

    Tire Life

    • According to Schaumberg Auto Medics, inflating car tires with nitrogen provides proper inflation and a cooler operating temperature, increasing tire life up to 25 percent. This is because nitrogen is less affected by outside temperatures and maintains consistent pressure through the seasons.

    Blowouts

    • Proper inflation of tires helps to prevent tire blowouts. Up to 60 percent of blowouts are caused by improperly inflated tires. Tires filled with nitrogen maintain proper inflation up to four times longer than tires inflated with air, reports Schaumberg Auto Medics.
