New Jersey Public Adjuster License Requirement
Public adjusters work with injured parties to value and negotiate a claim with an insurance company. The public adjuster is a licensed profession, regulated by the Department of Banking and Insurance in New Jersey.

Applicants for a public adjuster's license in New Jersey must submit to a background check, including a fingerprint check, through Live Scan. As of 2004, the State of New Jersey no longer accepts fingerprint cards of Form SBI212 criminal history reports. Public adjusters cannot have a criminal background or have been involved in administrative actions over other licenses held.

An applicant must complete a training course and examination through PSI Services LLC, a New Jersey-approved vendor, before obtaining a license. Once the license is obtained, the adjuster is required to complete continuing education courses equivalent to 12 credits a year in order to receive a license renewal. Three of the total required credits must be from ethics classes.

Application Fees

As of 2010, a fee of $320 is required when submitting the license application form to the Department of Banking and Insurance. However, this fee will be waived if the applicant submits a certificate from the United States Veterans Administration indicating that the applicant has disabled veterans status.
