SSL Certificate Warranty Explained
A secure sockets layer (SSL) certificate warranty protects users who transmit personal information through a website they assume to be secure because it uses SSL technology.
-
SSL Technology
-
SSL technology creates a secure, encrypted connection between a Web server and a website user's Web browser. This technology allows users to disclose private information through a website without needing to worry about confidential data being tampered with or stolen.

Websites, such as those for online businesses, purchase SSL certificates to use the technology for their virtual stores to protect customer's personal information when they make purchases.

SSL Warranty
-
A SSL certificate normally comes with a warranty that protects a website's users. If a website with a SSL certificate turns out not be secure and a user's personal information is stolen or tampered with, the warranty ensures users will be financially compensated for the security breach. Warranties often range from $10,000 to $250,000 (as of 2010). Some websites purchase a certificate with a warranty of $250,000 or more. This is because someone who steals a user's credit card information, for example, could run up a large credit card bill.
