Proscan HDTV Company Information

The strange history of Proscan is a multifaceted tale.

The history of ProScan is an interesting one if only because of the number of companies involved in the history of the brand. RCA, Thompson Consumer Electronics, ON Corporation and General Electric have all been involved in the story.

Origins

The Proscan was originally created by RCA in the early 1990s when it was a subsidiary of General Electric. It was designed as a high end, high definition television (HDTV) brand to compete with Sony's Trinitron brand and Pioneer's Elite brand. General Electric sold RCA along with the right to sell GE to the French-based Thomson Consumer Electronics. In exchange, General Electric got part of Thomson's medical business. Thomson, in turn, eventually sold the RCA TV division to China's TCL.

Sold to ON

Before selling RCA, Thomson licensed the Proscan Brand to ON Corporation. ON currently holds the ownership and logotype of Proscan (as of December 2010). RCA currently sells its HDTVs under the Scenium brand.

About ON

Because ON Corporation is a private company, little public information is available. The company is based in South Korea, with offices in San Diego, California. Proscan televisions are manufactured in China.
