Disposable Vs. Reusable Nappies
Some parents choose to use cloth diapers (nappies) in place of disposable ones for a number of reasons. Consider all the pros and cons and your current family situation before making a decision on what you will use for your baby.
-
Financial Difference
-
Cloth diapers incur a greater "start-up" cost (which depends on the number of diapers you initially purchase), but this is a one-time fee. After that, you just have the cost of an additional few loads of laundry each week. Disposable diapers are a consistent, frequent shopping purchase, as are the wipes and disposal bags associated with them.
Environmental Impact
-
It could take 500 years for just one disposable diaper to decompose, plus the associated packaging and wipes have their own environmental impact. This is not to say that cloth diapers are environmentally neutral -- they do require water to dispose of solid waste and for cleaning -- but you can line dry the diapers to save energy.
-
Ease of Use
-
Some parents ultimately choose a diaper type based the ease of use. Both diapers have similar requirements in terms of storage, use and disposal. Although cloth diapers take a little more space and have a few extra items associated with them, a planned system can go a long way toward making their use manageable and efficient.
