Disappearing Task Bar While in a Remote Session in Windows

Remote sessions can be an invaluable tool in getting computer help from afar, or even for accessing your home computer from work. Usually, a disappearing taskbar is simple to fix in the settings.

  1. Identification

    • The most likely reason that the taskbar is disappearing is that the remote desktop connection is set to full screen instead of just a portion of the screen; by setting the full screen, the taskbar can become hidden.

    Prevention/Solution

    • You can change the display size of the remote desktop session by going to "Options" and selecting the "Display" tab. Under "Display Configuration," there is a slider that runs small to large; if the slider is all the way to the right, the session will default in full screen mode. Additionally, setting the program to "Run as Administrator" may help smooth over any lingering issues.

    Considerations

    • It's possible to navigate a desktop using keyboard shortcuts. Using the Windows key on the bottom-right side of the keyboard or by pressing "Ctrl" and "Esc" simultaneously will open the Start Menu. Pressing "Alt" and "Tab" simultaneously allows you to switch between the open windows in the environment.
