Facts About the US Citizenship Test

Facts About the US Citizenship Test thumbnail
There is more than one part to a US Citizenship test

Before you become a U.S. citizen an officer with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service will interview you about your application and background. After the interview, you'll be given both a civics and an English test.

  1. English Test

    • The English test checks your abilities to speak, write and read English. During your interview, the USCIS officer will judge your English speaking ability. For the reading test, you must read at least one of the three provided sentences correctly. You also must write one of three sentences correctly.

    Civics Test

    • The naturalization test consists of 100 civics questions. From this list, you'll be asked up to 10 questions during your initial naturalization interview. Out of 10 questions asked, you must correctly answer at least six to pass the test. Questions might involve our form of government or even how many stars and stripes are on our flag.

    Retesting

    • For each application, you can take the civics and English tests two times. Within 90 days of failing any part of a test during your interview, you can retest on the part of the test you failed. If you fail again, you can start the whole process over again once you think you've studied enough to pass the English and civics tests.

    Exemption

    • You may receive an English language exemption if you have lived permanently (with a valid green card) in the U.S. for 20 years and are at least 50 years old, or if you have lived in the U.S. for 15 years and are at least 55.
