Can You Plug a Power Strip Into Another Power Strip?

Power strips allow you to plug several appliances into one electrical outlet. Power strips can be convenient, but they can cause electrical fires or electrical shock if used improperly.

Warning

Do not plug a power strip into another power strip or a surge protector. This is called "piggy-backing" and causes electrical hazards. Instead, plug power strips directly into the electrical outlet. Only plug one power strip into each electrical outlet.

Considerations

Do not use a power strip in a damp area, since moisture may cause electric shock. In addition, do not put power strips underneath carpet, in walls or under clutter or furniture, since inadequate ventilation can cause fires. Do not staple or tape power strips.

Recommendations

For best results, choose power strips that have internal circuit breakers and are approved by the Underwriters Laboratory (UL).
