How to Compare Monitoring Software

Monitoring software is used by government intelligence agencies and employers to track computer and Internet activity. Since a variety of monitoring software programs are available to choose from, the selection process must take into consideration the type of monitoring that will be performed, such as real-time or historic.

  1. Function

    • Consider software programs that serve to monitor various types of activities, including incoming and outgoing email exchanges, Internet browsing, online purchases and records of instant chat mechanisms.

    Blocking

    • Some types of monitoring software install blocking protection that disables certain websites from being viewed on the computer. Blocking controls are effective for business offices that do not want their employees visiting inappropriate websites during work hours.

    Keyloggers

    • A keylogger is a system that stores and unlocks usernames and passwords. Keyloggers allow the individual doing the monitoring to reuse this sensitive information to log on as the original user and browse through the activity history. Only certain monitoring software contain keyloggers, so this might be something to consider when comparing systems.

    Operating System

    • The type of operating system on the computer will dictate which monitoring programs are compatible. This is especially important when considering a program to purchase for an Apple computer, which utilizes a different operating system than Windows.

    Research

    • Research the reviews that users have provided about monitoring software to help make a well-informed decision.
