In the towing world, Chevy, Ford and Dodge each manufacture a truck to handle the roughest jobs and tow large loads. Dodge deputed its version, the Dodge Ram, in 1981. Each year, Dodge offers an option casually referred to as a towing package, made up of installed parts to optimize the truck for towing.

Trailer Tow

Dodge began calling its tow package, trailer tow, after 2009. The package contains parts that improve the towing capacity and safety of the truck while towing.

Components

The actual parts in a trailer tow package vary year-to-year and model-to-model. It may include integrated trailer brake controller, hitch receiver, industry-standard seven-pin wiring harness and a trailer brake-wiring harness.

Towing Capacity

The maximum towing capacity of the 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 is 10,500 lbs. The tougher and more powerful 2500 and 3500 versions tow a maximum of 15,450 lbs and 19,000 lbs, respectively.

Other Factors

Dodge also offers other options for improved towing not available in all trailer tow packages such as a rear backup camera, rear park assist system and folding or power extra large mirrors with turn signals.
