Effective Listening for Proper Communication
Effective listening helps you build trust and rapport with others, accurately obtain information from conversations, reduce conflict and motivate others. Taking an active, engaged approach to listening helps you exchange information more effectively in professional and personal situations.

Tips
-
Look at people as they speak and turn your body toward them. Remove or turn off distractions, such as the radio, television or computer. Nod to show your understanding and ask questions when appropriate. Let yourself pause and reflect before responding to the person.
Considerations
-
Effective listening requires time and attention. If you don't have time or energy to properly listen to someone who unexpectedly approaches you, consider asking him whether you can continue the conversation when you can give him your full attention, and suggest a few times that work for you.
-
Function
-
Your approach to listening should change based on the purpose of the interaction. For example, if you are counseling a friend about her relationship, giving your advice and sharing stories about your own experiences may be appropriate. However, if you are listening to your boss give you instructions, you should usually convey your understanding without digressing.
