Keeping your wheels aligned will keep your tires from ending up on the trash pile too early.

The price for tire alignment, usually referred to as wheel alignment, varies greatly depending on where you live and the type of alignment you want. Alignment is important for handling of your vehicle, as well as for the life of your tires.

  1. Types

    • You may get two-wheel alignment, which is the most common type done, and usually that refers to the front end of your car. A four-wheel alignment is also available, and costs more but puts your car in total alignment. Alignment for four-wheel drive vehicles is a bit different and usually costs more.

    Pricing

    • Prices vary widely, depending on your location. Two-wheel alignment generally costs between $30 and $60 as of December 2010, and four-wheel alignment is usually between $50 and $100. Many repair shops try to avoid advertising specific prices.

    Benefits

    • The main benefit to keeping your car aligned is extending the life of your tires. A poorly aligned car could cause one side of the tire to wear out rapidly, making the tire useless. Driving also is easier in a properly aligned car. A poorly aligned car can cause accidents by making steering more difficult and less accurate.
