A member of the dogbane family, plumeria (Plumeria spp.) is a large bush or small tree notable for its large, leathery leaves and waxy flowers. Gardeners interested in cultivating plumerias must follow a series to care guidelines to ensure a healthy plant. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Hardiness

    • A native of Central America and the Caribbean, plumeria requires a nearly frost-free environment to thrive. The tree will drop its leaves if temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. For best results, grow in USDA zones 9 to 11.

    Location

    • Plumeria is tolerant of both full sun and partial sun locations. Plumerias may be cultivated directly in the garden or in a container. Gardeners in cooler climates can grow plumeria as a houseplant, sheltering it indoors through the winter.

    Soil

    • Though tolerant of a range of soil types, plumerias do best in a rich soil that is moist to the touch. Houseplants undergoing winter dormancy require no watering or fertilizing.
