Can the Labial Flange Be Lengthened on a Denture?

Can the Labial Flange Be Lengthened on a Denture? thumbnail
The labial flange of a denture allows the lips to sit naturally.

The labial flange is the portion of a denture which extends from the teeth into the space between the gum and lip. This portion of the denture can be lengthened to provide an accurate internal support structure for the lips.

  1. Symptoms

    • A labial flange that is too short for a patient's mouth will cause a caved-in look below the nose. On the lower lip, the drop from the lip to the chin will appear more convex than usual for the patient.

    Repair

    • In the dentist office, a wax border can be built up along the edge of the denture and refitted to the patient's mouth. Once the patient is satisfied with the new appearance, the denture must be sent to the lab to be reconstructed according to the new model.

    Shortening

    • The labial flange can also be shortened. A labial flange that is too long gives the look of fullness or swelling above the nose and chin. A technician can grind the labial edges of the denture to reduce the length and produce a more natural look.
