California Truck Route Laws

The California Truck Advisory Network was developed because trucks cannot be prohibited from driving on roads in California. California's truck advisory routes have been updated to include routes created because of the Federal Surface Transportation Act of 1982.

  1. Types

    • There are a number of truck routes available in California, including Surface Transportation Assistance Act routes colored green on maps and local truck routes colored blue. California truck advisory routes include yellow advisory routes, black routes and red routes.

    Yellow

    • Trucks over 40 feet long are advised to avoid yellow routes. Where a maximum truck length is recommended, the driver of a truck smaller than the recommended length is still responsible for dangerous driving, such as crossing the center line.

    Other Routes

    • Trucks are allowed to use all highways in California except those with special restrictions for height, weight and number of axles. Routes in California that have special restrictions on the type of truck not allowed on the road are colored red on maps.
