A Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is a type of set-top box used to record video in a digital format. These recordings are saved to a hard disk installed inside the DVR unit. To use a DVR, you have to subscribe to a DVR service.

Types

Most cable and satellite service providers offer DVR services with their subscription packages. When you subscribe to a DVR service through a cable provider, they supply you with a hybrid DVR/cable box. Installing a hybrid box to a TV is less complicated than installing an independent DVR box provided by an separate service provider such as TiVo.
Hybrid Boxes

To hook up a hybrid DVR/cable box to a TV, you must simply connect the main cable signal directly to the DVR. Next, the video and audio output from the DVR is connected to the TV.
Independent DVR Boxes

With an independent DVR box, the DVR has to be connected the cable box in addition to the TV. As a result, the main cable signal is split between the cable box and DVR. Also, the video and audio output from the cable box must pass through the DVR before going into the TV.
