California Mace Laws
Mace is a brand name and should not be confused with pepper spray. It is a registered name for a brand of defense sprays manufactured by Mace Security International. States have their own laws regulating the usage and sale of Mace, and at this writing California's was last updated in 2008.

In California, Mace is legal. A non-minor may use tear gas products, which includes Mace and pepper spray, as long as they are used solely for self-defense. State restrictions include a prohibition against selling any tear gas products to minors. There is also a provision limiting the amount sold to 2.5 ounces.

California law prohibits some people from purchasing and using Mace, aside from minors. These include anyone convicted of a felony or any crime involving assault and any person who is addicted to narcotics. If these people are caught attempting to purchase or use Mace, they can face harsh punishment under California law.

Misuse of Mace

Examples of misusing Mace are using it out of anger, using it as a joke or purchasing it for a minor. Violators will be subject to a fine of $1,000 and as much as three years in prison.
