Specs for a Ford 170 Ci

The Ford 170-cubic-inch (ci), in-line, six-cylinder engine powered Ford cars beginning in 1961 and was an option on the compact Falcon and standard equipment on the mid-size Fairlane. The Ford Ranchero utility coupe pickup was also equipped with the economical 170 engine.

  1. Configuration

    • The 170 straight-six engine was a water-cooled, front-mounted, longitudinal four-stroke engine with a pushrod and rocker overhead valve system with two valves for each cylinder.

    Measurements

    • The straight-six displaced 170 cubic inches or 2.78 liters. It featured a 3.50-inch cylinder bore and 2.94-inch stroke. Its oil capacity was 4.5 quarts.

    Power

    • The 170 engine's horsepower ranged from 101 to 111 depending on the Ford model and whether the car was marketed overseas or in North America. In the North American market, for example, the 170 featured 105 horsepower (hp)at 4,400 revolutions per minute (rpm) and generated 158 foot-pounds (ft.-lbs.) of torque. In contrast, Ford's smaller 144-cubic-inch in-line six developed 85 hp at 4,200 rpm and 134 ft.-lbs. of torque. In Australia, the 170 generated 111 hp.

    Compression and Carburetion

    • The compression ratio of the 170 ranged from 8.7:1 to 9.1:1, depending on the year and model. All 170 versions delivered fuel through a single-barrel carburetor.
