What is a California Salvage Title?

What is a California Salvage Title? thumbnail
Salvaged cars can be titled once they have been repaired.

California has two forms of salvaged vehicles: salvage vehicles and revived salvage vehicles. All vehicles that have been considered any form of salvage receive a salvage title and license change.

  1. Identification

    • California titles have a section labeled "history" that indicates that the title is for a salvaged vehicle. The box is located at the top of the title above the vehicle identification number, year, make and model information. Salvaged vehicles retain the brand "salvage" on the title even after being repaired to an operable state.

    Definition

    • California describes a salvage vehicle as one that has been damaged and the cost of the repairs are greater than the cash value of the vehicle. This form of damage may occur in several situations including auto accident, vandalism or flood. Revived salvage vehicles are previously salvaged vehicles that have been repaired and reregistered with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Before a car can be reregistered, it must pass an inspection performed by the DMV to ensure that the vehicle is roadworthy.

    Considerations

    • Although revived salvage vehicles are inspected by the California DMV to ensure they are roadworthy, this is no guarantee that the vehicle is restored to its previous road condition. Salvaged vehicles that have been repaired with illegal parts do not qualify for retitling, and the car or parts may be seized by the DMV.
