Citizen's Guide to Radon Reduction
Radon is an invisible, odorless gas that is poisonous when present over a certain amount. It is the second-highest cause of lung cancer in the United States behind smoking. Taking steps to reduce radon is important for home safety. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Safe Level
-
Radon is measured in picocuries per liter of air, or pCi/L. A home is considered to have a dangerous amount of radon when there is more than the average in the outside environment, or greater than 4 pCi/L.
Radon testing
-
Radon tests can be purchased from a state radon office, or a qualified tester can be hired. Short-term radon tests are the simplest and least expensive. They remain in the home for 2-90 days. Long-term tests are more expensive because they require power to run, but they also give the most accurate reading by offering a projected year-long radon measurement in a home.

Contractors
-
To reduce radon, a certified contractor should be hired. These qualified mitigators know how to best install the technology that will keep radon out of the home. Typically, this involves sealing cracks in the home that could let in radon and installing a ventilation system that will vacuum radon from the surrounding soil and vent it away from the home.
