What Is Port Triggering on Linksys?
Linksys is a brand of network devices that are readily available from electronics, computer and big box retailers, Linksys network hardware (including routers, switches or hubs) are capable of port triggering.
-
Function
-
Port triggering on a network device, such as a Linksys router or switch, is a network option the administrator can choose. When triggering is in effect, the network device will open (or trigger) an incoming port when a specific outgoing port is in use. Thus, the device will return all incoming data to the computer that triggered the incoming port until the outgoing connection terminates.
Benefits
-
Port triggering can be an alternative to port forwarding. Network administrators may choose to trigger a port instead of forward a port because the triggered port only opens after the trigger occurs. The forwarded (incoming) port always remains open when the administrator instructs the network device to forward ports.
-
Considerations
-
Additionally, when creating a port trigger set up, the network administrator will use specific ports based on the data that will be incoming. For example, web (browser) traffic uses port 80 while incoming mail traffic typically uses port 25.
