A Comparison of Defragmentation Software
Defragmentation software improves the performance of a Windows computer by putting file clusters into contiguous space. Windows comes with its own defragmenting program, but third-party applications are also available.
-
Native Windows
-
All versions of Windows come with a native defragmentation utility that can be found under Start > Accessories > System. This utility can be used in conjunction with Windows Task Scheduler to schedule regular defragmentation.
Commercial
-
Numerous commercial defragmentation applications are available, including Diskeeper and Perfect Disk. These programs use different defragmentation algorithms than the native Windows utility and can be significantly faster than the native Windows defragmentation. Features and prices vary greatly between commercial applications, and many commercial defragmenters offer customer support.
-
Open Source
-
Open source defragmenters, including MyDefrag and UltraDefrag, are available for free via the Internet for commercial and private use. Performance is comparable to many commercial packages though it can vary greatly between different applications. Support for each application varies and is provided by the open source community.

I have been using PerfectDisk for a few years now and I find it to be a fantastic program. I used to use the built-in defrag device, and to me, it's no comparison. The software is affordable and their customer service and tech support has been great as well. -

I think if one is willing to consider paid programs, the best option is a fully automatic real time defragmenter. Some of the advanced features such as extreme low free space defrag, system files defrag and prevention of fragmentation (up to a large limit) make the actual defrag task a breeze. I think they may be the best options for serious defrag chores on servers and networks.
