The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox ranks second on the U.S. News and World Report (USNWR) list of best affordable crossover SUVs. With a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, it gets 22 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, according to government estimates. The 2011 Chevrolet Traverse--with front-wheel drive and a 3.6-liter, six-cylinder engine--produces 17 mpg in town and 24 mpg on the interstate. It ranks No. 5 on the list.

The 2011 Mazda CX-9 ranks third on the USNWR list. With two-wheel drive, its 3.7-liter, six-cylinder engine delivers 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The 2011 Mazda CX-7--with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive--gets 20 mpg in town and 28 mpg on the open road. USNWR ranked it eighth on its list.

With a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine, the 2011 Kia Sportage ranks No. 12 on USNWR's list. It gets 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. The 2011 Kia Sorrento, ranked No. 16, gets 20 mpg in town and 26 on the interstate when outfitted with a 3.5-liter, V6 engine.
